Joy of Japan

Sorry! I've been very slow in posting about my recent trips. I will be leaving Korea is less than a month, so figured I'd better get these posted before then!

In April/May, my parents traveled to visit me. Unfortunately given the time limitations, they flew into Seoul, stayed there overnight and then flew with me to Tokyo the next morning.

Of all my travels in Asia, Japan has been the most “comfortable” place I’ve been. This is probably because it’s the most westernized. This could be a street in an American city (if not for the Japanese characters). Word to the wise, you can't escape cell phones anywhere in Asia; if you want to fit it, buy a cell phone and talk on it non-stop!

We started our trip in Tokyo with a trip to the Tokyo Tower Observatory and an amazing view! Notice the interesting mix of skyscrapers to the right and historic buildings to the left.

We also visited several palaces and shopping areas in Tokyo.

The next morning we journeyed off to Mt Fuji.

It's amazing how in a few seconds the weather and view can change. The first picture was taken about 5 minutes before and a couple hundred feet below the second.

A highlight of the trip was our visit to Nara. The city of Nara houses the The Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple. Legend has it that if you are able to fit thru one of the healing support pillars in the temple healing pillars you are guaranteed a place in heaven. I have photographic evidence of my squeeze thru, so I can just quit now, right?!

Nara Park is also home to many deer. I've seen many deer in zoos, but this is the first time hey chased after me!

Thanks for a wonderful trip, Mom and Dad!

Goodbyes!

If you have talked with/emailed me over the last year, you have probably heard me mention Patrick, Lynn and Adeline. Pat and I went to family practice residency together at Andrews.

Lynn and Adeline, his wife and daughter, accompanied him t0 Korea. During residency, I had occasionally done things with Lynn but I was blessed with the opportunity to get to know her much better this year. Lynn and Adeline traveled back to the States yesterday (Pat will be here another 5 weeks before joining them). Despite two layovers and more than 15 hours of flying time, 16 ½ month old Adeline (and her Mama) survived the trip!

Lynn, I don’t know what I would have done without you this year. You have been a great presence in my life and will be truly missed!
